Online Summer Music Camp

The 25th annual Summer Music Camp, sponsored by the Reno Pops Orchestra, is open to students who have had at least one year of instruction on one of the instruments listed below and will be entering grades 7 through pre-college in the Fall.

  • Ukulele
  • Piano
  • Voice

Because of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s camp will again be conducted online.  Students will meet with private instructors and are also invited to participate in small group enrichment sessions for instruction in jazz, mariachi, ukulele, chamber music, theory, conducting, and vocal ensemble.  This will all be done from home, using Zoom or a similar online conferencing service on a computer or smartphone.

Although we have some grant support, we are asking for a donation of $50 per student from those who can afford it to help with camp expenses.  You may make a donation using either of these options:

Camp Director:  José Flores has directed the Summer Music Camp for 24 years, and has been teaching bands and orchestras in the Washoe County School District for this same period of time. He is on the UNR Music Department faculty, and is a past Music Director of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Concert Orchestra.  He has received numerous awards and recognitions including: 2002 Excellence in Education, Teacher of the Year 2006, and Teacher Fellow, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts/National Symphony Orchestra.  His Mariachi class was recognized as the 2014 Outstanding Club of the Year at UNR.

Instructors and Coaches:  In addition to José and Reno Pops Music Director and Conductor, Jane Brown, our instructors will include UNR Professors and current and former Washoe County School District teachers, assisted by Reno Pops Orchestra musicians and top UNR music students.

Other:  If you have already planned a summer vacation, we will make accommodations so that you can still attend as much camp as possible.
